Dude, this is great!! These video’s are awesome and very helpful… I’ve wanted to start working on hand drill fires, but I figured I should try and get a bow drill fire first. Still can’t. I recieved a bow drill fire kit from my uncle, but I used it so much practicing, that I’ve worn the string and spindle so they’re slippery. Do you have any tips for finding bow drill materials and for getting a fire going? If you have any links that would be great. Also, I’ve nearly gotten an ember a while back, but I just can’t seem to get it… do you have any practical experience tips for getting that? Feel free to respond to this via email or by replying, whichever suites you best.
If the string is slipping then you should tighten the bow. You can carve the spindle into an octogonal shape so the edges give the string something to grip but really you just need to tighten the string. I like the string to be so tight I can barely get the spindle in there. There is so much that goes into a bow drill fire…. practice for half an hour every day and I’m sure you’ll get it soon. Each part of the kit needs to be perfect. Rub little flakes of soap in the hand hold and make sure there is no friction at all on the top.
Thats some nice stone you have out there.
There is a lot of quartzite and silt stone but not much fine knapping stone. Everything you need for survival purposes though.
